Adult nappies and protective underwear

Adult nappies, also called adult diapers or protective underwear, are made for moderate to heavy bladder or bowel incontinence where a pad isn't enough. They hold much more than a pad, help stop leaks at the legs and waist, and are designed to keep skin drier for longer, day or night.

There are three main types, and the right one depends on how mobile the wearer is, how heavy the incontinence is and whether a carer helps with changes.

Types of adult nappies

Pull-up pants

Pull-ups go on and off like regular underwear, so they suit people who are mobile and change themselves. Popular choices include TENA Pants Plus, MoliCare Mobile and Abena Pants. Shop adult pull-ups.

All-in-one briefs (slips)

Briefs have refastenable side tabs and the highest absorbency, so they're the usual choice for heavy incontinence, overnight use and for anyone who has help with changes or is in bed or a wheelchair. Examples include TENA Slip Maxi, MoliCare Premium Elastic and Abena Slip Premium. Shop adult briefs and wrap-arounds.

Incontinence underwear

Slimmer, more underwear-like pants for light to moderate leaks, including gender-specific designs from Depend and TENA. Shop adult incontinence underwear.

Choosing the right size and absorbency

  • Size: measure around the waist or hips at the widest point and check it against the range on the pack. A good fit matters more than anything else for stopping leaks.
  • Absorbency: most brands use drops. The more drops, the more the product holds. Overnight and heavy incontinence usually needs 7 drops or more.
  • Day or night: many people use a lighter pull-up during the day and a higher absorbency brief or night pant overnight.

Junior and bariatric sizes

For children and smaller bodies who have outgrown baby nappies, see junior pull-ups and junior wrap-arounds. We also stock bariatric sizes, such as TENA Bariatric, for larger waists.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between adult nappies and incontinence pads?

Pads sit inside your own underwear and suit light to moderate leaks. Adult nappies replace underwear completely and hold much more, so they're for moderate to heavy incontinence. Lighter needs are covered in our incontinence pads and liners range.

Can I buy adult nappies with NDIS funding?

Yes, continence products are commonly included in NDIS plans. House of Nappies is an NDIS provider. See our NDIS page for how to order.

Are adult nappies suitable overnight?

Yes. Choose a high absorbency brief or night pant and make sure the fit is snug at the legs and waist.

Is delivery discreet?

Yes. Every order is packed in plain packaging and delivered Australia-wide.
