Choosing an Economical Disposable Nappy for Your Baby

With so many different nappies to choose from, at various prices and in assorted pack sizes, it can be really hard to figure out which is the most economical option. But considering your baby will go through around 6,000 nappies before being toilet trained – the costs can really add up, so it’s important to choose an economical option.

Firstly, it's important to understand the difference between economical and cheap. Some nappies can be placed into both categories but not all cheap nappies are economical. logo-houseofnap

Newborn babies will usually need changing after every feed – so feeding every couple of hours you can expect to go through 12 nappies in a 24-hour period. From 6-12 weeks this number should start to reduce down to about 6-8 nappies a day.  By the time baby is sleeping through the night, you’ll probably be down to 5-6 nappies a day, but it will be important to choose a super absorbent nappy that will last through the night. To find out how much a pack of nappies really costs, firstly divide the total cost of the packet of nappies by the number of nappies in the pack, to find the cost per nappy. For example if a carton of 100 newborn nappies costs $30, then the cost per nappy is 30 cents. Now times this by the number of nappies you will use per day. So assuming that newborns go through about 10 nappies a day, 30-cent nappies will cost you about $3 per day, or $21 a week.

House of Nappies makes it easy to see the cost per nappy under the product details for the nappies on this website. It’s also important to keep in mind that highly absorbent nappies can last longer than nappies that don’t absorb as much, so spending slightly more on these many work out cheaper in the long run. A nappy that costs a few cents more but lasts for several wees may work out cheaper than a nappy that needs to be changed after every wee.

Not all brands may work for all babies so try experimenting with some different brands. Expensive nappies don’t necessarily mean that they are better quality or long lasting.  Keep experimenting until you find the brand that suits you and your baby best.

House of Nappies provides a quality range of disposable nappies to buy online including a new range of Swim Nappies and Huggies Pull-Ups all at low prices.

How often should I change my baby’s disposable nappy?

This is a common question we receive at House of Nappies. Here is some general advice to help you keep your baby comfortable without you changing nappies every 5 minutes.

Nappies for Newborn Babies

Newborn babies will usually need changing after every feed – so if you’re feeding every couple of hours you can expect to be changing your baby’s nappy every couple of hours too. Babies that are bottle fed generally need changing slightly less than babies that are breastfed.

You can expect to go through about 12 nappies per day/night for the first 6 weeks of your baby’s life. From 6-12 weeks the time between changes should start to reduce down from changing every couple of hours to changing every three hours.

As Your Baby Grows

Babies generally need to be changed every 2 or 3 wees, or after every poo (which ever comes first!) The acid content of poo is irritating to your baby’s skin, so when they poo it’s important to change your baby’s nappy straight away. But it’s not always necessary to change your baby after every wee. Quality disposable nappies can hold 2-3 wees before they are full. The moisture is quickly trapped and stored away, so your baby’s bottom stays dry. Babies can wee up to 20 times a day, so it can become very tiresome (and unnecessary) to change them after every wee.

How to know when your baby is wet

The easiest way to know is to buy a quality disposable nappy that has a wetness indicator. This lets you easily tell when your baby is wet and can help you save from guess work and many unnecessary nappy changes.
